Strengthening Curriculum using the Internet

Research: NETS 1
previous page next page

The first of the six NETS Standards for Students deals with teaching students how to understand basic operations and technology concepts. Technology can empower students to learn holistically as well as authentically if it is used as a tool. As students become proficient in the use of this tool for information gathering, assessing, and sharing, they will begin to have the knowledge to become life-long learners in this new information age.

1. Basic Operations and Concepts

As a rule, technology should never be taught outside of regular classroom curriculum. However, to empower your students in their use of technology with your curriculum, they need a basic understanding of how technology works. These activities can be done in an after school computer club, summer school projects, or during your regular school time. Here are some suggested activities that you can do with your class:

A. Lesson Plan for Surfing Safely
created by Tammy Payton
This is a lesson designed for the second through the sixth grade student. This lesson offers tips for teaching students what the Internet is, how to navigate on the Internet, and assessing whether or not the information found is quality information.
B. Slide Show for Introducing the Internet
created by Tammy Payton for ICE conference
This slide show is designed for teachers and illustrates tips for explaining what the Internet is as well as suggested Internet sites to use with elementary classroom curriculum.
C. Do Spiders Live on the World Wide Web
Located on the Internet Public Library web site, this slide show explains common technology terms your students should be familiar with. After viewing this slide show, you can challenge your students to create their own book of synonyms. An example of this kind of activity is the book The King Who Reined.
D. The Electric Teacher
Developed by Cathy Chamberlain, technology integration specialist at Oswego School District in New York, she has written helpful tutorials for FrontPage©, Office 2000©, PowerPoint©, and more.
E. The Journey Inside
INTEL offers an online multi-media guide that explains how technology works. Recommended for 5th – 9th grade math, science and technology classes, parts of it are suitable for even younger or older students.
F. Teacher Toolkit
Microsoft has several online tutorials for using their software as well as links to integration ideas on this web site.
