Identify your Search Engine

What are topical or subject directories?

With topical or subject directories, people have visited and evaluated the content before adding it into the searchable database. They also select words and phrases to describe the sites that they add. Information is usually placed in the engine in a hierarchical fashion beginning with broad topics then narrowing it down to specific information. Because there is an evaluation process, more control of the content has been used before that information was added into the searchable database. The results of a search may be highly relevant, but not as current as with indexed database (keyword) engines due to time required by the reviewers.

Since there is more control over the content added to the searchable database due to the review process, this type of search engine is more beneficial to elementary students.
