| What
are keyword search engines?
The content for keyword search engines is not inputted by people.
Rather, these search engines make use of a computer program called
a spider or crawler that travels out along the Web searching for
sites. When the program reaches a web page, it actually explores
all the links at that site and indexes them. This is done automatically
on a routinely basis. When you use one of these search engines,
you are not actually searching the entire Web, but rather the engine
is searching its own index.
Meta-search engines don't assemble their own index of websites,
but they search the indices of subject directory and keyword search
engines, and then provide a summary of results from each search
engine.
Since there is little control over what content is being indexed,
these search engines are more appropriate for Middle and High School
students.

completing the practice exercise, go to the next page.
