Narrow Your Search

The next few pages include definitions and practices for using Boolean and Mathematical signs in your searching strategies. These are most often used in keyword search engines.

Boolean and Mathematical Sign

geology and rockhound
geology + rockhound
geology+rockhound

Keyword Search: and/+

The word and and the sign + will connect your concepts together by requiring that both of these words appear in the results. Try adding or deleting spaces between the plus sign and the concepts to discover variations in the number of results that are returned.

Now use the "Practice Exercie" below to try out this concept. You can either use key concepts that you brainstormed earlier in this course or use the "rock" suggestions seen in the above left-hand column.

After completing the practice exercise, go to the next page.
